What Causes Liver Spots
Condition: Liver Spots What causes liver spots? Liver spots are the result of the skin's defence mechanism against over-exposure to the sun. When a person has been in the sun for a long period, unprotected, the pigments pool to some spots to protect the skin, thus leaving an uneven brown patch. Most of the pigment skin changes happen are a result of oxidation that occurs early in life. Melanocytes, which provide our coloring, are the sites where pigment is produced. Oxidation, especially from sun, can cause these melanocytes to be affected and create a condition later in life that causes a cluster of pigment, or... at the other extreme, a complete loss of pigment, in an area of skin. Other names for pigment Liver spots (they are now known to have nothing to do with the liver), are age spots Lentigos, and Senile Lentigines. These dark pigment areas of the skin are pigment clusters that are very common after the age of 40. They often occur on the backs of the hands, on the forearms, shoulder, face, and forehead where exposure to the sunlight's radiation. They are usually harmless and painless, but they may affect the cosmetic appearance of the skin. Liver spots on abdomen, legs & other areas normally not exposed to the sun are a little more unusual and may be a Skin Pigment Change Warning Sign. Infant liver spots
