The Orchid Story
There are roughly 30,000 species of orchids with 120,000 additional hybrids. Orchids come in an enormous variety of sizes, shapes, and colors. The name derives from the Greek word orchis, which means "testes" and refers to the shape of the flower's roots.
 

Orchids are found on every continent except Antarctica. Records of orchids can be traced back as far as 5008. C. in China and to Greek and Roman times. They were prized for their perfume, flowers, foliage and in at least one case, their seeds. To this day, orchids grow naturally in all corners of the world. Divisions or propagations of orchids discovered in the 19th century are still growing and blooming today: a botanical heritage from an earlier century.

Orchids are surprisingly resilient in their native habitat. Most orchids are epiphytes: meaning that they cling to their host for support but do not feed off of it as a parasite would. Their roots are aerial, preferring open air exchange instead of being buried in soil. Their white roots gather moisture and nutrients from water and air. Some Orchids live in areas that experience dry periods, which can cause the orchids to grow thick succulent leaves capable of storing water. Oilier sympodial orchids have thickened stems at the bases of their leaves, called pseudobulbs, which hold water. Further testing of orchid extracts led to the idea of an orchid oil. This new orchid oil product was infusing hair with many of die same characteristics as the orchid flower. The following are the

Moisture Balance: The orchid oil provides moisture balance for hair that has become delicate from chemical treatments, thermal stress, and daily UV and UVB exposure. The orchid oil brings the hair into a moisture balanced state by restoring consistent hydration levels, so when die hair and scalp need moisture, they are not overly moisturized. The tests also showed dial even in high humidity areas the oil would not allow an over abundance of moisture to weigh the hair down and make it frizzy.

Light Weight / No Residue: Orchid oil is very lightweight and does notweigh the hair down. Unlike most other oils and shine products, it does not affect die hairs ability to perform when styling. Because the orchid oil is not greasy, and leaves no residue, the hair has the ability to hold a style with desired volume and texture.

Coarse and Curly Hair: Coarse and curly hair is the ideal candidate for orchid oil due to its inability to hold moisture. During testing'. White Sands discovered when orchid oil is applied to coarse curly hair, it balanced the moisture and created consistency in texture for defined curls, making the hair soft and shiny. In essence, orchid oil will eliminate frizz and work in conjunction with other styling products to change texture and repel moisture, while enhancing vibrant color.

After thorough testing of the pure orchid oil. White Sands became astonished with the results and wanted to incorporate this as a new product in our line. However, roughly 2.2 pounds of roots is needed to make just 1 gram of orchid extract. Since a pure orchid extract would be very expensive, a lower cost alternative was necessary. Testing began with combining silicones that were light weight and volatile to the orchid extract. Volatile silicones were used as they dissipate quickly and allowed the hair to receive the same benefits of the orchid oil and achieve all of its natural capabilities.
